I can't think of anything other than Dinosaurs and the like, but many modern montana animals are at risk.

Landmarks and street signs are a great clue. You can also look to other local symbols. For instance, in California, all you have to do is look to the flag for one (big) clue.

Many of the above answers are based on pre-history, but you might be surprised by what animals have disappeared in your area over the course of human history, and even over the past 100 years.

The maiasaurus dinosaurs and tyrannasaurus rex dinosaurs both lived in Montana.

Dinosaurs roamed Montana freely years ago. Today, we only find their skeletons here.

Dinosaurs. But, not exactly a species. More of a family.

Mammoths.

Giant sloths.

I know from early education. I'd go to a reference librarian, or Google.

Carrier pigeons, giant sloth, dinosaurs, sharks; how far back to you want to go?

Consult your local science museum.

1. Your local museum will know
2. What ARE local species here? What's missing?
3. What local landmarks are named after species you don't see

Passenger pigeon! Also, bobcats are long gone.
