OXO Strainer

oxo-strainer-sm.jpg

The OXO Steel Strainer really qualifies as a cool tool because it takes an everyday tool that everyone knows and makes it so much better. It's the nicest Hawthorne strainer I've ever seen, dispensing with the useless handle, and adding a nice little rubber pad to put your index finger on as you strain. It's a joy to use.

I'll still use a julep strainer for anything with tons of floating herbs or fruit stuff—also for straining canned food instead of the previously reviewed Can Colander.

This is an everyday tool for an alcoholic. Sheesh. Isn't there and iPhone app for that?

Why bother with a unitasker? Not a very 'cool' tool. Just use another glass or a shaker that has a strainer built in.

@Nathan - Using a second glass takes two hands and can be messy without practice. 3-piece shakers (the ones with inbuilt strainers) have a reputation for mechanical fussiness, and the strainer end is usually so small that decanting the drink, especially if it contains herbs, fruit or fine-crushed ice, takes a long time. The small amount of holes get plugged quickly.

As for the unitasker status, the spring from a hawthorne strainer, plopped into a shaker, makes amazing egg froth or whipped cream in a minute or two of shaking. When you're finished, you pop the spring back on the strainer and VOILA!

Cool Tool or not, no mixologist would be caught without some sort of strainer.

A cool tool is anything useful that is superior to comparable items. If you think this tool is inferior suggest a better one. You are welcome to insult a tool, but comments containing insults to individual people will be deleted. Corrections of fact are always welcomed, if stated politely. Recommendations of better tools are dearly wanted and may be elevated to the front page.
