Peg Locks

A pegboard with a series of different hooks is a very useful thing to have in one’s garage or workshop, but the biggest frustration in using it is that the hook will, more often than not, come out and fall to the floor when the tool is removed. Peg locks are ingenious little plastic gizmos that cover over the hook, keeping it attached. Two flanges fit into the adjacent holes, which are generally not being used for anything else, anyway. They work with both 1/4- and 1/8-inch pegboards.

Nice. The first package of peg board hooks I ever bought included keepers in them, but I didn't "get" it and threw most of them away. I kick myself for that everytime I take something down now...

Are these peg locks metal? The ones included in the multipacks of hangers and hooks at Lowe's include cheap plastic locks that just don't work - the come off if you so much as breathe on the hook, much less take something off of it.

A blob of hot melt glue works well in the lower pegboard hole covered up by hook and does not damage the pegboard when the hook is removed. Inject the blob in the hole, swivel the hook down over the blob, and hold it for a few seconds. After a few attempts you refine how much hot melt glue is needed.

I've used these for some time. They're great for a couple of years, but the plastic eventually hardens and becomes brittle. They inevitably snap. Especially so if you want to move the hook to another location.

While the company makes the plastic locks available as a separate product, they're not available in Canada--retailers only carry the combined peg and lock packages.

Umm... zipties? $3 per billion or so last time I checked. Whenever possible, I like to use multi-purpose tools rather than single-use components like these. Or like dlfuller mentions, hot glue.

Gotta agree with Travis. They came in a pack with a bunch of hooks when I just set up my pegboard all of 3 weeks ago. They're pretty flimsy and pop off easily which defeats the whole purpose.

I've used these with generally good results.

Agree with Travis & Mike Y. They came with the hooks, look exactly like the ones in the photo, and they pop off as soon as you take something off the hook.

Jeff suggested zip ties but once you poke the end of the zip tie in one hole how are you going to fish it out of the other hole? I suppose you try using a loop of wire but that sounds like an exercise in frustration.

Plastic or not this is great news! I really thought it was just me that caused the hooks to fall. I just feel better knowing that I'm not that only one that has metal hooks raining down on them when I they are quickly grabbing for various tools off the board.

how bout twist ties? they are practically free, and would last a long time, easily removable when you need to.

Pegboard in a shop is a sign of being the rankest form of amateur...

Pegboard is handy. I am apparently the rankest form of amateur, but so it goes.

Have used these for over 10 years. They have never, ever come off or broken. As a matter of fact they are a little hard to remove when changing locations. Cannot imagine using peg hooks without them. Amateur? Really? I thought it is was I sign of organization, my bad.

Amateur for using pegboard? What planet do you live on?

Anyway... I have to say I do not understand this. We use pegs in our pegboard. Why wouldn't you??? They don't fall out and are very solid. They hold the tools well and you can space them to hold pretty much any tool, even if there is no hole in it. Easier, cheaper, and works better than hooks in my opinion.

plus vote for zip ties or twist ties or tape or string
it's not that the peg lock isn't useful
it's just that it's such a one trick pony

I've used these for years, and never had one come loose. Is it possible that the people who've had trouble are using thick pegboard? I have 1/8" board, and I suspect that the legs of the retainers may not be long enough to let the hooks seat in thicker board.

I've got metal peg board which is quite thin. These don't work for me, they pop out all the time.

I just got a bunch of these with a set of hooks and they work nicely. And yes, I am an amateur. I DON"T make a living with my shop or shop tools and I have no formal training. something wrong with that?

Joseph L. (or others) - what kind of pegs, specifically. I've only ever seen hooks to be used with pegboard, never pegs (although that does make perfect sense, it being PEGboard, after all).

These just don't work. In any situation in which you're using a tool/item frequently, the things just pop off. Better materials?

Barelyfitz and Mr. Fosmire - thank you for your links and recommendations! You rock!

The pegboard hooks I use have a "bottom peg" that almost, but not entirely, prevents pullouts. They look like this:

and not like these:

The metal thingies BarelyFitz linked look pretty sturdy to me.

Adam W: organization is a sign you're an amateur. Any real shop is a holy hell of a mess.

Actually, just kidding on that.
