LockJaw Self-Adjusting Pliers

These tools work similar to ViseGrips except they automatically adjust to the size of the object they're gripping. The tension desired is adjustable via a set-screw, but once the tension is set, different size objects can be clamped without readjustment.

Also, the release lever is opposite that of the ViseGrip in that you pull on the lever with your ring finger while maintaining full grip of the pliers. No more pliers flying across the room and no more pinched fingers between the release and handle!

I first saw these at a welding supply shop and thought "what a great idea". I went home and found them on line for a much better price and ordered three pairs in varying sizes. The first job I used them on was putting up a bus shelter. Some of the sheet metal had to be pulled together to close the gap and get the fasteners through.

I discovered the jaws lock when the tensioner adjustment is reached and will not close any further. The original vice grip design lets you pull the material together. It is adjustable, but for pulling two things together, they just don't work well. I keep a pair by the drill press to hold material I'm drilling and they work well for that. Hard to explain the difference, but these just aren't suitable for some applications. The original vice grips are still more versatile if less convenient.

On a side note, I think it is a crying shame that vice grips are now made in China.
