Multi-Master Tool

I'm in the process of restoring an old lapstrake wooden boat. The MultiMaster with a saw blade was the perfect tool for cutting out a section of a board. The boards overlap each other, and the travel of the blade of a jigsaw or reciprocal saw was too great to target the piece of the board that overlaps another board. Even doing it with a handsaw was too difficult to control on this tough wood.

The MulitMaster tool is just a vibrating head. So it vibrates this little sawblade and it cuts right through with great accuracy. The blade itself has very little travel, making it perfect for this application. I shoved a thin piece of sheet metal between the overlap of the planks to keep from sawing into the other board, and I was able to cut exactly where I wanted to. I know of no other tool that I could do that with, though I'd love to hear of any alternatives.

I saw this same little feller on Harbor Freight's website for 50.00 I think. It's a knockoff but is the same exact design.

I'm one to spend a thousand dollars on a tool, but here's the rub; Dremmel now makes a tool very similar for 99.00. I can buy and throw away several Dremmels for the price of the Fein Multi-Master.

That being said, I recommend this tool design for anyone that spends anytime building or remodeling. All the guys make complaint that I'm trying to build furniture instead of the box to put - I'm always making my cuts too tight. the Dremmel
is great for trimming a sixteenth or getting into spots that no other tool is designed for.

My dad has the Harbor Freight knockoff, and loves it. I have observed that the biggest drawback of the HF model is a poorly configured sanding pad, whose edges are not beveled nicely - the sanding pad for the Dremel has a good bevel to the edges so the metal won't hit the other face when you are sticking it into an inside corner. Not sure if the Dremel part could be put on the HF body, have to look into that.
