Japanese Screw Punch

This lovely tool can punch through multiple layers of paper, mat board, etc. It is great for making eyelet holes in fabric as well as leather. Used by book makers and mixed media artists. It is amazing in its ease and is very durable! Earns Extra Foofy Points to be able to say you have a "Japanese Screw Punch."

The advantage of this tool (sometimes called a Paper Drill) is that unlike your usual plier-like paper punch, this one is not constrained by where you want a hole. You can drill a hole anywhere on any size sheet -- not just the edges -- by bearing down on the handle. To compensate for the lack of leverage you do get in a plier-like punch, the shaft of this screw punch rotates as you press, neatly slicing a trim hole. It will go through 15 pages of paper at once; thicker materials will require multiple passes. It comes with five bits, but the largest one will be smaller than the typical paper punch hole, so I've found more careful alignment is required.

I bought something similar in Korea five years back for about $2 in a stationery store. It has only one punch, about the size of a normal looseleaf hole, and is far less elegant, but quite durable. It still works fine.

If one reverses the punch in the handle there is a long needlelike awl, I guess to poke holes for sewing paper into signatures???

Korea has great stationery stores; wonderful pocket notebooks and stuff all very cheap compared to North America.

I also bought some interesting woodworking tools in hardwares, but the metal quality was not great and they do not hold edges well. This may not be a fair comment on Korean tools generally; I picked up very inexpensive ones of types I had not seen in the west. One which seemed like a good concept was a knife blade like a chisel (but thin like a knife) that cut along the front edge. If better made, it could probably be a very useful item around the shop.

I just purchased one of these after seeing one a friend had. It looks just like the one in your picture but I cannot get the bits to stay in place- they fall right through the end piece that screws onto the main piece. My friend who has one could not get mine to work either. Do you think I am missing a piece. There were no directions included. Do you have any suggestions or do I need to send it back to the eBay vendor? Thanks.
