Dentemp

Dentemp is a traditional dental combination of zinc oxide and eugenol (clove oil) mixed when needed to make a temporary tooth patch for lost cavity filling, or to re-cement a cap or inlaid on a tooth. It's strong enough that you'll need to have a dentist remove it later. Since an emergency Dentemp kit weighs less than an ounce, it should be part of your traveling or backpacking kit. You can get it at almost any drug store.

It did not work for me. The product shown and the product I received were not the same. The product I received was a one part substance that crumbled and dissolved in my mouth.

It didn't work for me. Comes like a thick paste that did nothing more than take up space in the crown... tried to make it work several times. Never bonded my cap.

Just applied the 'polyfilla' textured mix to the 2 cavities I have at the top right side of my mouth. I lost the first filling about 4 months ago then got that one packed 2 months later, only for the packing to fall out 2 weeks later & break off the edge of the tooth holding the filling in the tooth alongside - bringing that filling out also - a nightmare !
I think I misjudged the amount I would need as I was applying it into the cavities myself and made too big a ball.... so don't overjudge the amount.
Anyway, by the time I'd bitten down several times to set the mix into place, the extra mix was easy to remove. In the time its taken me to check this webpage & type this - the mix is beginning to set.
The overall experience seems ok and the taste/smell of cloves & cinnamon offsets the gagging feeling of something strange in your tooth.
The pain relief is fairly instant & I think for the price of 4.50 its well worth it for that alone - give it a try...

Didn't work for me. Will not stick and falls out immediately. Waste of time and money.

I'm not sure how the three people who posted negative comments about this product arrived at their conclusions. But the instructions are simple, you follow them, and it works as advertised. Perhaps the negative commenters were expecting this to be a permanent solution to save them from ever having to go to their dentist to have their problems properly repaired. Of which, is not what this product is advertised to do.

Everyone either loves this product (85%) or says it doesn't work at all.

I suspect dentists don't like it at all.

In the 5 years since this article was first posted, Dentemp has changed.
It is no longer a paste that you mix up yourself, it's now already mixed in a small blue vial.
Link to the new/improved Dentemp: http://www.walgreens.com/store/store/product/product_details.jsp?id=prod2339

I actually just bought this Dentemp on 9/16/09, and I took out a small amount from the vial, you only need a small amount, do not use too much or it will not work!

Step 1. Rinse your mouth out with lukewarm water, tooth area must be wet.
Step 2. Take a small amount out of the vial, ball it up between your WET index finger and thumb.
Step 3. Take small balled-up Dentemp and pack it in the cavity by pushing down and in to the cavity.
Step 4. Bite down semi-hard and count to 5.
Step 5. Use WET index finger to pack it in again.
Step 6. Bite down semi-hard again.
Step 7. Use WET index finger to gently rub excess off of sides of tooth.
Step 8. Rinse mouth gently with lukewarm water.
Step 9. Wait at least 1 hour before eating or drinking anything.
Step 10. Make appointment with dentist for within the next 30 days, Dentemp will only hold for 1 month. It is a TEMPORARY filling, NOT permanent.

I really think that the people who posted that it didn't work, didn't properly follow the instructions which are much shorter than what I wrote, but some people need step by step instructions or they will totally screw up even this extremely simple to use product.

The person who said it crumbled and dissolved in his mouth, probably did not rinse his mouth with lukewarm water like the instructions say. The tooth MUST be wet, it says so right in the instructions to rinse the mouth and do not dry the tooth.
Using it on dry fingers and a dry tooth, causes it to crumble and fall apart.

I believe it's the same reason that it did not work for "Joe" as well.
The instructions clearly state that the mouth and tooth must be wet.
The tooth must be wet in order for the paste to stick, this is a cement type fill, just like real cement, it has to be mixed with water, so wet the mouth/tooth, DO NOT dry the mouth or tooth.

For the $4.99+ tax that I paid, I am extremely satisfied with this product.
It filled and bonded my lost filling within the hour the package said, and the clove-tasting pain reliever that it uses made the pain from losing the filling, disappear immediately.

I could not be happier with the product, and I have at least 3-4 more applications left in the vial, which is great, because I can't get in to see my Dentist until mid-November to get a new filling unless I want to pay the "emergency fees" that most local dentists like to charge people.
It's going to cost me almost $400 to get a new filling, I simply cannot spare a $250 emergency fee on top of that, so I'll use the $4.99 Dentemp until my appointment on November 18th 09.

Hey Larry and kat,

I know how to follow instructions. I bought two. Tried it four times.
Secondly the product written about is a two part mixture which is not what I received.
I not only followed the link but did enough research to, with some surety, get the product that I was after.

Third, presuming to know what I think and assuming that I can't follow instructions makes you a what?

As for me, this product saved me from spending the evening with 4 missing teeth. I had a 4 anchor temporary bridge put in about a week ago and it came out this evening as I was brushing my teeth. While I wasn’t sure what to do, I had to do something to calm the panic that surged through my body. Having said that, I went online and discovered this product. It was all they had and I wasn’t entirely confident that it was going to work. In any case, off the CVS Pharmacy I went. Let’s keep in mind that it’s 1:30am in the morning and I had little choice in the matter.

I was so anxious to get my teeth back in that I failed to properly read the instructions. For this reason, my first 2 attempts failed. It wasn't until the third attempt of cleaning out the old cement and following the instructions to the letter, i.e., teeth wet, properly filling the crown, etc, did I discover what an incredible product this really is. Worked like a charm!!! I am 50 minutes into the dry cementing process and it feels comparable to the cement used at the dentist. Of course, this is not designed as a permanent fix. Considering that it’s now super early Saturday morning, I need to wait until Monday to get it re-cemented “dentist” style. For now, I genuinely thank this product for saving me an entire weekend of embarrassment and shame...

i needed a root canal, but could not afford it the time and was leaving the country for a week. A friend gave this to me to take in case the pain got worse. Well it did as the nerve was beginning to expose. I followed the directions and my temp filling has been in place for almost 3 weeks! whoever says it does not work cannot read directions! Awesome product!
