QuikClot

This is a must for any 1st aid kit. QuikClot is a topical blood clotting agent for scrapes, cuts and wounds (they claim some even very serious). You basically apply this stuff to an open cut, and it instantly clots to stop bleeding. Tested by the US military. This stuff works great for those scrapes, cuts and wounds encountered on the road. I've been using it in the bathroom for shaving cuts, too.

quik clot is a great coagulant but the powder form isn't recommended for more serious injurious due to the fact that heavy blood flow keeps it from penetrating the wound. it just washes right out. current issue in the army is Hemcon, it looks and feels kind of like one of those dehydrated sponges and if you really need to you can break it into strips that you can insert into the wound and it will seal it shut, it's one of the few things short of a clamp or timely stitches that can keep you from bleeding out with a serious wound. the other option is an israeli bandage which is similar to our standard pressure dressing but also has a coagulant. I'd also recommend a good tourniquet, a SAM splint, and a tool like a benchmade rescue hook (for cutting through clothes to get to an injury without the chance of cutting the patient or yourself) as some items that are big holes in most peoples first aid kits.
take care, and heres hoping you'll never need any of this stuff.
