Amazon's 800 number

On average I've ordered from Amazon once a week for the last eight years or so. Not just books, but power tools, toys, kitchen stuff, the whole lot. Given the volume of my orders I think their customer service is super great; it sets the gold standard for other companies. No other merchant online or offline has provided the ease and accuracy of ordering as Amazon does. Still, in my experience there are occasionally glitches that their email-bots can't deal with, usually entailing a minor billing snafu. In these rare cases you need Amazon.com's almost-secret real-person customer service telephone number. You won't find it on their website. I once got it by calling 800 directory assistance. In any case, they make it hard to find because a call costs Amazon more, so you should jot down these numbers for those special moments when only a human will do:
1.800.201.7575 (Toll free, US and Canada)
1.206.346.2992 or 1.206.266.2992 (Outside US and Canada)
1.877.586.3230 (Canada only)
0.800.279.6620 (with UK for Amazon UK)
44.20.8636.9451 (outside of UK)
And while I am at it, here's two more hard to find numbers:
e-Bay 1.408.376.7400 and 1.800.322.9266 (Toll free US)
Pay Pal 1.888.221.1161

In our experience, Amazon does not have "great" or even good customer service. They incorrectly charged an inactive account for an order, resulting in an overdraft charge of $35.00. When asked to refund the money since the error was theirs, they refused to do so.

thank you for posting the amazon info! i was trying to call them to update my cc # as i downloaded some stuff and didn't realize my old cc on file didn't work. even though i updated the cc info, they don't know that. and i already have my downloads.
i was going to KINDLY tell them of the new card so they could put the charge on my card. i DON'T have to do this because i already have the downloads and was doing this because it was the right thing to do. however, the frustration of trying to locate an 800# on their site just pissed me off. they deserve whatever they get if they're too stupid to post a #. way to go amazon. what a way to piss off the customers! morons!

Thank you for the info. I called and spoke with a very pleasant customer service person. I wanted information on a listed merchant that wouldn't come up in Google. The product was $8 cheaper than two other merchants and I couldn't understand why the co. wasn't listed. She said sometimes it's a private person, not a company, and the only way you can get the e-mail address is to buy the product. No thanks. Then I told her how difficult it was to find an 800 number for Amazon and that others on the web were dissatisfied also. She was amazed that there is no link on the website. She finally said to go to Help at the bottom of the page and type "contact" in the help search box. Then everything falls into place. She said she would post my comments to Amazon (I don't know where that is, but she can knock herself out). Thanks again.

Thanks for the number. Now my complain about Amazon is they use those Indian reps who don't know anything about anything, and with accent impossible to understand. I am pissed off more now! Still, thanks for the number again.
