Utili-Key

Several nerdy friends of mine who feel naked without their pocket knife have independently discovered that this handy mini-knife disguised as a key will both work in a pinch and -- shhhhhh! --pass through airport security checks unnoticed. Here is a way to travel with a knife at the ready. Just hand them your keys when you go through the machine!
I've had one, and when I bring my keys I have no trouble getting through security on international and domestic flights. I was surprised to find the other little gizmos incorporated into this miniature thing -- particularly the philips screwdriver -- are just as useful.

I must say, I've given all my brothers these as gifts.. They're slick as can be and very useful. I'm a minimalist when it comes to keys as I hate things bouncing around in my pocket but this little tool is worth the weight. The blade is sharp enough to cut plastic zip-ties, the mini screwdrivers are useful and while hard to use, the bottle opener works in a pinch...

Have to say: totally useless.
1. It did not seem to come in handy for much on a daily basis. I rarely used it.
2. The only thing it seemed particularly adept at was making holes in my pockets. The tip is quite sharp.
3. After carrying it in my pocket and using it quite rarely for about 6 months, it inexplicably fell apart.
IMHO one of the key-ring sized multi-tools with a pliers is infinitely more useful and durable.

I've had mine in my pocket for 5 years now. No holes, still works, and I use it occasionally. Also I still take it through airport security.

Kevin...Watch out carrying thru airport security, especially since you have identified yourself and stated you do this and are "telling' other folks that it works for you. Have you ever seen the contents of a container that prohibited items go into at your local airport, or at any airport? Not a great amount of this particular item, since they are not a great a seller, as say, swiss army knives, but, security is, and has been well aware of this product and the credit card multi-tool. You could be cited for carrying an "artfully concealed prohibited item" when you're caught. Example: A person can drive 90 mph on the Interstate everyday for a week or more/or less and not get caught, but you know what.... that State Trooper or Highway Patrol officer is good at writing those tickets. It's his/her job and they really like it.

I've had one of these for years as well and it has never poked any holes in my pockets...and I've also taken it on dozens of domestic and international flights (usually hanging on a plastic clip in my backpack that goes through the x-ray machine) with a total of three items on my keyring--my house key, vehicle key, and the utili-key. (In other words, it's not exactly hiding amongst a ton of keys on my keyring.) As noted, the bottle opener is a bit poor but it does eventually get the cap off--usually in less than three tries. The other bits are great and work exactly as designed.
In fact I'm leaving this note here because I was doing a search of the archives to see if this had ever been reviewed; I thought I remembered seeing it but I wasn't sure, and if it wasn't here, I would have written up a review for it.

I've found this both useful and handy (realizing it'll never be a Buck knife or a multi-tool) but it does NOT make it through Canadian security - I've had 3 confiscated at different times while passing through pre-boarding security. Best to pack it in check-in luggage to be safe.

I have one of these, and every time I have tried to use the phillips screwdriver and several times opening bottles I have ended up bleeding, a few times pretty badly. This thing can cut you and pinch you. I used a grinder to take the very sharp tip off the phillips screwdriver. This thing is not safe and will soon be replaced with something more useful and less dangerous.

Great little tool! The bottle opener just takes a little getting used to. While it may poke a hole in your pocket (hasn't done it to mine), as mentioned above, it's great for intentionally poking holes in beer cans for a shotgun.
