Outdoor leadership expeditions for young adults, like Outward Bound and others, are expensive and elite. But I am wondering if they are effective? Do they accomplish their goals of elevating kids' "leadership" and living skills? Does anyone have experiences of either going through these themselves, or sending their kids through one? And if so, is there is much difference between the programs? I'd prefer to hear from those with experience, rather than from those who have an opinion but no experience. |

We have a trouble teen boy (now 17). We have done many different things to try and help him and what we have discovered is that NO PROGRAM "works" unless the person in it INVESTS themself in it, which, of course, you cannot FORCE someone to do. That being said, I have a friend who was a NOLS instructor. In general, I feel very good about the NOLS program, especially if someone is there voluntarily. It is not aimed at "troubled youth" and I think it is very well run, and yes, these things are, by their very nature, expensive. I am not sure I feel as good about the supervision in Outward Bound, ESPECIALLY because they are dealing with troubled youth. link |
